Pack the field guide in something honest. On the black canvas tote bag, the bold flat graphic reads: It was a leaf. I watched it for ten minutes. A lakeside camp chair, a row of pines and one orange leaf on the water tell the rest. Long look, short story.

Handy for snacks, a thermos and the binoculars that saw everything except a bird. Easy pick for a birding buddy, a park ranger or a Secret Santa with a feeder in the yard. Guide in, snacks on top. The leaf has since been removed from the official count.
